Chapter Twenty–Six

Two weeks later Francesca was back on the sonobed. Unfortunately, Leo was unable to join her. While she was disappointed, he promised to call her back to find out what the doctor had to say. Later, while at work, he called her. She told him that Dr. Taylor was very happy and that the baby appeared to be developing normally.

“When do you plan on seeing her again?”

"Not anytime soon unless there is a problem."

“Okay. Feel free to ask me if there is anything I can assist with.”

“Sure.”

Before she put down the phone, Leo asked, "Francesca can I see Zoe this weekend? I was thinking of taking her to the movies and going for a meal as promised."

"I'll have her call you. I'm not sure what her plans are, but I know she'll be glad to see you."

The Saturday morning, Leo picked Zoe up early and she was home by three o'clock that afternoon. Francesca invited him in, but he declined because he had to get to the restaurant.

As she closed the door, she turned to see Zoe sitting on the couch staring at her. "Is something wrong...?”

"Why did you not tell me?"

“Tell you what?" Francesca asked in confusion.

"That you are the reason why this family is no longer together?"

In response, she sat beside her. “What did Leo say to you?”

"He told me enough, Mom," she responded with tears in her eyes. “How could you?”

“Sweetie, I am not sure what he told you, but I can assure you that it is not true.”

“Are you saying that he is lying?”

"Tell me what he said to you, and I'll tell you if it's true or not.” Francesca took her hand. Zoe pulled it away.

"He said he found you with your boss one night when he wanted to bring you food. He didn't elaborate much, but he didn't have to." Tears were trickling down her cheeks. "I liked him a lot," she whispered. "He tried really hard with us." She added. "Having to worry about two kids that weren't his must have been difficult."

"I know, honey. And I regret my actions every day, but unfortunately they cannot be undone. With him having another girlfriend, I don't think we'll ever work things out," she said sadly.

"He didn't tell me that." She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her sweater.

This surprised Francesca. "Leo hasn't told you that he is dating someone else?"

"No," she replied, shaking her head. “Do you know her?”

"It's Silva, Antonio's sister."

As Zoe stood, she looked at her. “This family is crazy.”

"I'm so sorry, sweetheart. As painful as everything is, at least something good came out of it," she said in reference to her pregnancy.

"I guess," she replied. "I need some fresh air. Perhaps I'll go to Kylie for a while. I'll see you later."

"I thought we could stay home and watch a movie or something."

"I already watched a movie today." she told Francesca, kissing her on the cheek as she walked away.

"Okay," she muttered to herself.

Later that evening, as Francesca loaded laundry in the laundry room, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her abdomen.
